Yakutia's Bone Marrow Donor Registry Surges to 600, Boosting Chances of Life-Saving Matches
Yakutia has seen a surge in bone marrow donors, with around 600 locals joining the federal registry. This initiative, led by Minister of Health Lena Afanasyeva, aims to save lives affected by oncological and genetic diseases. The Republican Blood Transfusion Station in Yakutsk, headed by Svetlana Nikolaevna Popova, plays a crucial role in this effort.
Yakutia joined the Federal Registry of Bone Marrow Donors in 2021, and since then, nearly 600 volunteers have signed up. Among them, 4 transplants have been successfully performed, including 2 from unrelated donors. The process is safe for donors, with stem cells fully restored within 1-2 weeks. Regular blood donors, numbering almost 10,000 in Yakutia, also play a vital role in saving lives annually.
Finding a suitable donor is challenging, with odds as low as 1 in 10,000. However, the growing number of Yakutian donors increases the outlook of finding a match. To join the registry, one can visit the Republican Blood Transfusion Station or register through the Gosuslugi website.
