Witnessing Firefly's Blue Ghost's Historic Lunar Attempt: A Step-by-Step Guide

Following a 45-day period, Firefly Aerospace's spacecraft is gearing up for its significant event. Witness it unfold live through this link.

Witnessing Firefly's Blue Ghost's Historic Lunar Attempt: A Step-by-Step Guide

Get ready for an epic space journey! Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander is gearing up for its big moment. After 44 days in space, on March 2, 2025, at an ungodly hour of 2:45 a.m. EST, Blue Ghost will make its attempt to touch down softly on the Moon.

You can catch this historic event live on NASA+ and Firefly Aerospace's YouTube channel. The livestream will kick off at 1:30 a.m. EST, with some sources suggesting an even earlier start at 2:30 a.m. EST[1][2]. If you miss it, we don't blame you; it's the craziest time for a sleepover, space style.

YouTube page. The livestream will start at 2:20 a.m. ET on Sunday, March 2, about 75 minutes before Blue Ghost is scheduled to touch down at 3:34 a.m. ET. You can also watch the landing at the livefeed below.

Blue Ghost has been cruising in leisurely mode, orbiting Earth for 25 days before entering a 16-day lunar orbit. It will then descend upon Mare Crisium, a Moon basin formed by an asteroid collision, at an hour-long pace. The touchdown will be assisted by on-board vision-based tools, keeping Blue Ghost away from craters, rocks, slopes, and other lunar hazards[1][2].

Firefly’s Lunar Lander Captures Haunting Earth Eclipse From Space

Once it's safely on the ground, Blue Ghost will initiate its scheduled 16-day stint of surface operations. With 10 scientific instruments aboard, there's plenty to do, including studying the Moon's heat flow, inner structure, and the effect of solar winds and Earth's magnetic field on the lunar surface[1][2].

lunar horizon glow.

As the mission wraps up, Blue Ghost might just capture some spectacular cosmic moments. On March 14, the Earth will block out the Sun, resulting in a total lunar eclipse. Then, two days later, there's a lunar sunset, a rarer event than its earthly counterpart. Lunar sunsets have some quirks, like a strange lunar horizon glow due to dust and electrically charged particles[1][2].

In a lunar first, Blue Ghost is one of three landers heading to the Moon at the same time. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that carried Blue Ghost also housed Japanese ispace's Resilience probe, which will attempt a landing in April. Athena, another lunar lander, launched on February 26, 2025, and is slated for a March 6 landing attempt[1][2].

already run into some trouble. Athena is taking the most direct route, and is scheduled to attempt its landing on March 6.

So here's to humans pushing boundaries and doing some radical space stuff!
