West Side Chronicles: Jovial Journeys Ahead

In the realm of journalism, one man's life story stands out as a testament to the spirit of adventure and resourcefulness. Although his name remains unspecified in the records, this enigmatic figure has been described as a semi-respected writer at a reputable newspaper press, and later considered a legend in his own mind.

Growing up, the author's life was anything but ordinary. He reminisces about the freedom of hitchhiking and traveling, comparing it to being a hungry little bird, always on the move, always seeking nourishment. His travels took him to various corners of the globe, including Mexico, where he attended the Instituto de Allende, taking classes in writing and poetry.

Life in Mexico was not always easy for the author. As a gringo, he was barred from working, forcing him to be creative to survive. He sold his written poems for a peso and often resorted to eating in unconventional ways. One such memory involves wandering into a university cafeteria in California and pretending to be a student, enjoying a royal feast. In Mexico, a loaf of white bread and a pack of bologna could last a week during surf days, while for one peso, he could buy three shriveled avocados and a stack of tortillas.

The author's adventures didn't end in Mexico. He found himself in Hawaii, living in a house where guests would bring leftovers from McDonald's every night. Every night, he was provided with bags of Big Macs, fries, and apple turnovers from McDonald's leftovers. During pupu hour, restaurants offered free food with the purchase of a drink, a practice that the author took full advantage of.

As the author grew older, he realized the consequences of his past actions and sought stability. He got a job to support a family and lifestyle, leaving behind the days of hitchhiking and living on fish cakes and saimin. Today, he writes a bi-monthly column for West Hawaii Today, continuing to share his unique perspective on life.
