Updated guidelines for power banks: Crucial information for travelers now revealed

Powerbanks, a common travel accessory, are subject to stricter regulations on many flights. Here's a breakdown of the key points for passengers to keep in mind.

Firstly, powerbanks must be stored in a bag under the seat or in the seat pocket for the duration of the flight. This rule applies to various airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, and Korean Airlines, who have implemented similar measures since March.

When it comes to spare batteries, these must be carried by the passenger and placed in a transparent plastic bag or have their contacts covered with insulating tape. The Federal Aviation Administration allows a maximum lithium-metal battery lithium content of two grams, and up to eight grams with airline approval.

It's important to note that powerbanks are not allowed in checked baggage, a rule that applies to all airlines mentioned. Additionally, powerbanks are not allowed to be used during flights.

The capacity of powerbanks is a crucial factor. Passengers are only allowed to bring powerbanks with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours. For instance, a powerbank with a capacity of 20,000 milliamperes (mAh) and a voltage of 5 volts (V) would equal 100 watt-hours.

Starting October 1, Emirates, along with Lufthansa and other airlines, will enforce strict guidelines for carrying powerbanks in carry-on luggage. From this date, Emirates will ban any use and restrict carriage to under 100 Wh, only in seat pockets or under the seat, not in checked baggage. Other airlines, such as Singapore Airlines and Scoot, already have similar rules in place.

It's also worth mentioning that there has been a recent incident suspected to be caused by a powerbank. A fire on a Busan Air plane in late January is suspected to have been caused by a powerbank in the overhead bin.

In conclusion, it's essential for travellers to be aware of the rules surrounding powerbanks when flying. By following these guidelines, passengers can help ensure a safe and smooth journey.
