Underwater Artwork Awards Announced: Celebrating Marine-Themed Artistic Creations
In September 2020, the underwater photography community came together for the Ocean Art 2020 competition, a celebration of marine life and ocean conservation. Sponsored by Bluewater Photo and Travel, Ikelite, Paralenz, AquaMarine Diving Bali, the Watergarden Hotel, Sealife, and Atlantis Dive Resorts, this event attracted entries from 79 countries.
The competition featured categories for Wide Angle, Macro, Marine Life Behavior, Portrait, Coldwater, Shipwrecks, Blackwater, Underwater Conservation, Underwater Art, Compact Wide Angle, and Compact Macro. The "Famous Motorcycle of Thistlegorm" and "Welcome to Tubbataha" categories showcased the unique and diverse underwater landscapes from the Red Sea, Egypt, and Tubbataha Reef, Philippines, respectively.
One of the standout images was "Releasing Hope" by Edwar Herreno, which won Best of Show. This powerful photograph captured the hope for our future oceans, a theme that resonated with many participants and viewers.
In the individual categories, winners included Rodger Klein for his first-place shot in the "Bubblewand" category, taken in Venice Beach, California, USA; Joanna Smart for her winning image in the "Curiosity" category, captured in Anacapa Island, California, USA; Stan Chen for his victory in the "Lemon Goby" category, taken in Lembeh, Indonesia; and Uwe Schmolke for his first-place finish in the "Beauty" (Compact Macro) category, shot in Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia.
The competition was more than just a showcase of stunning underwater photography. Ocean Art "Safe Under the Sea" aimed to bring people together to share the beauty of our oceans and aid the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC Foundation in their fight to improve the health of the planet and its people. The Underwater Photography Guide donated 25% of the competition's proceeds, bringing them thousands of dollars closer to a cure for Covid-19.
The winners of the Ocean Art 2020 competition can be found on the competition's website, and those interested in underwater photography competitions can look forward to the 2025 Ocean Photographer of the Year, the current prominent contest accepting submissions.
While Ocean Art 2020 may be a past event, its impact and legacy continue to inspire and unite the underwater photography community in celebrating the beauty of our oceans and promoting conservation efforts.
