Turkey's 2024 Trade Dominated by Large Enterprises, EU Top Export Destination
In 2024, Turkey's export landscape saw 179,673 enterprises engaged, while 318,603 handled imports. Large enterprises, though few, dominated both exports and imports, conducting the majority of import transactions, totaling 58.7%. They also accounted for 44.4% of exports. Industry-based enterprises led exports with 56.5% and imports with 47.3%, while trade-focused firms contributed 39.0% of exports and 38.5% of imports.
Microenterprises, making up 75% of exporters, contributed only 18.8% to total exports. The largest importers, primarily from the European Union, the United States, China, and Russia, accounted for around 58.7% of imports. Large enterprises dominated industry exports with 68.6% and imports with 80.5%. Manufactured goods drove exports, with industrial firms sending 96.5% in this category. The EU remained the top destination for industrial exports, absorbing 47.5%. Small and medium-sized enterprises carried the bulk of trade sector exports, reaching 89.0%.
In 2024, Turkey's trade landscape was dominated by large enterprises, particularly in the industry sector. The European Union was the primary destination for industrial exports, while microenterprises played a lesser role despite their numbers. These trends highlight the significant influence of large enterprises and key trading partners on Turkey's import and export dynamics.
