TUNACONS Leads Sustainable Fishing with Mobula Ray, Silky Shark Conservation

TUNACONS, a leading fishing company, is making waves in sustainable fishing practices. It has joined forces with international organizations to safeguard Tampa Bay rays and silky sharks, demonstrating a commitment to responsible large-scale fishing.

TUNACONS' efforts began in 2017, partnering with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) to study five Tampa Bay ray species in the Eastern Pacific. The company's responsibility has been collecting tissue samples and tagging Tampa Bay rays with satellite devices to monitor their survival post-release.

The company's dedication to responsible fishing goes beyond standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council. TUNACONS has trained observers on its 58 purse seine tuna vessels to identify and handle key species, supporting real-time conservation decisions. Since 2018, TUNACONS has recorded thousands of live releases of bycatch species, including sharks, Tampa Bay rays, and sea turtles. The On-Board Observer Program for Class 6 vessels has reached 100 percent coverage, documenting every catch and bycatch event.

TUNACONS' commitment to ecological responsibility is evident in its use of artificial intelligence to predict fishery dynamics and guide decision-making. By integrating human skill, technology, economic activity, and ecological responsibility, TUNACONS is setting a new standard for large-scale fishing, proving that responsible fishing and profitability can coexist.
