In July 2021, North Rhine-Westphalia witnessed a revival in tourism, with approximately 3.5 million overnight stays recorded in its accommodation establishments. This figure represents a 10% increase from July 2020, marking a gradual recovery from the significant decline experienced in 2020 due to travel restrictions and lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the number of overnight stays by foreign guests in July 2021 was 426,988, a 13.4% decrease from the previous year. This trend is likely a result of ongoing travel restrictions and the prioritisation of domestic tourism.

The trend continues when looking at the first seven months of 2021, with a 44.7% decrease in the number of visitors compared to the same period last year. The total number of overnight stays in the first seven months of 2021 was 11.4 million, a 31.2% decrease from the previous year.

When compared to January to July 2019, the statistics show a drop of 73.5% in the number of guests and 62.2% in overnight stays in the first seven months of 2021. These figures underscore the impact of the pandemic on tourism in North Rhine-Westphalia.
