Tourist-sized dessert extravaganza
Torre del Mar, a popular summer destination for domestic tourism, celebrated its annual Día del Turista (Tourist Day) with a spectacle of a cake. The event, attended by Deputy Mayor Jesús Pérez Atencia and numerous locals, was filled with the festive mood of the cooler evening.
The queue for the event stretched down the promenade near the lighthouse by 8 PM, with the majority of those waiting being Spanish holidaymakers. The giant cake, themed "sport and solidarity", stretched nearly 8.5 metres long and was a sight to behold.
The cake, prepared by Chef Alfonso, was a masterpiece of sponge and sugar paste. It was layered with peach jam and topped with 350 kilos of vegetable cream. The cake recipe included 35 metres of sponge cake soaked in spiced syrup. The theme was reflected in the decorations, which featured sports equipment and the town logo.
Chef Roberto Soler took center stage at the event, skillfully slicing the cake to serve around 4,000 slices. Atencia expressed gratitude to visitors for their loyalty and shared that Día del Turista is a way to share local traditions with them. He highlighted the town's many sports and associations, which were celebrated in the cake's design.
The event in Torre del Mar served as a testament to the town's commitment to its visitors, offering a unique and memorable experience for all. The giant cake, a highlight of the celebration, truly encapsulated the spirit of sport and solidarity, making Día del Turista an unforgettable event for both locals and tourists alike.
