Tourism in Germany shows signs of decline following a record-breaking year

Tourists everywhere are shying away from the charming landscapes of Germany, with a significant drop in the number of holiday stays There's a decline of 4.4% in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Last year, a whopping 88.7 million overnight stays were recorded, only to be outdone this time around.

Domestic tourists are venturing out less frequently, with a 4.8% dip in their stays to 70.2 million. Meanwhile, the number of foreign guests dropped by 2.6% to 14.6 million.

March proved to be a particularly lackluster month with accommodation providers in Germany reporting a disappointing 7.7% decrease in overnight stays, totaling 32.7 million compared to the previous March. The later Easter holidays, which fell in April this year, as compared to March in 2024, are thought to be the culprit behind this decline [2].

The German Tourism Association (DTV) isn't entirely pessimistic. CEO Norbert Kunz remains optimistic about a successful tourism year for Germany in 2025 [1]. However, he emphasizes that new overnight stay records alone don't tell the whole story. Infrastructure, municipal financial stability, and workforce recruitment are vital components for a solid tourism industry [1].

Not all types of tourist-related accommodations were hit by this slump. Health and rehabilitation facilities along with training centers showed a minor increase of 2.4% in March [2]. Conversely, camping sites experienced a hefty drop of 41.8% to 0.9 million in overnight stays, and holiday apartments and houses saw a 18.1% decrease in stays to 5.4 million [2]. The main reasons behind this trend are the later Easter holidays and the preference for family holidays, which these accommodations tend to cater to [2].

Caveat:The German tourism industry is grappling with a myriad of challenges including economic uncertainty, global economic challenges, and changes in travel patterns, all of which have contributed to the decrease in overnight stays. There's hope for a slow and cautious recovery in tourism, particularly during the summer months, but these uncertainties persist [3]. International travel, especially to destinations like the United States, has seen a corresponding decrease due to economic challenges faced by Germany [4].

Amidst the decline in German tourism, the CEO of the German Tourism Association (DTV), Norbert Kunz, remains optimistic for a successful year in 2025 but emphasizes the importance of community policy focusing on infrastructure, municipal financial stability, and vocational training for a robust tourism industry. Domestic tourists might choose to invest in home-and-garden renovations or vocational training, altering their lifestyle due to economic challenges, while international travel, including travel to budget-friendly destinations like those offering vocational training opportunities, may increase.
