Top Nine Methods to Capitalize on Korean Air SKYPASS Miles for Optimal Rewards

In the world of air travel, Korean Air's SKYPASS program stands out as a valuable choice for frequent flyers. With partnerships that include Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa, among others, SKYPASS offers a wide range of options for earning and redeeming miles.

One unique feature of Korean Air's program is its approach to South America. Unlike many other programs that charge a premium for flights in this region, Korean Air has only one region for all of South America, providing good values to travelers in southern South America.

SKYPASS miles can be earned and redeemed for flights on Korean Air, SkyTeam partners, and additional partner airlines such as Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. Lounge access awards can be redeemed for as little as 2,000 miles for domestic lounge access or 4,000 miles for international lounge access.

When it comes to award flights, Korean Air offers some exceptional value. For example, a round-trip business class ticket to Southwest Asia requires just 170,000 miles. Los Angeles to Tahiti on Air France is another special value, priced at 60,000/90,000 miles round-trip in economy/business.

However, it's important to note that upgrade awards on Korean Air flights are limited to expensive fare classes on paid tickets. Award space is priced by award chart, award region, and peak season. SkyTeam partner awards have their own terms and award charts by region.

Korean Air's first class award availability should never be underestimated, making it one of the best ways to use Korean miles. Infant award travel charges 10% of the adult fare in mileage.

Changes to international award tickets cost KRW30,000 (~$27), while a redeposit will deduct 3,000 miles (or 10,000 if more than a year from the date of booking). Fuel surcharges apply to award bookings and can vary greatly by route and airline.

SKYPASS miles expire 10 years from the date earned, regardless of subsequent account activity. Round the World awards can be a good value if pieced together, but only Korean Air and SkyTeam partners can be used.

The SKYPASS Family Plan allows up to 5 immediate family members to pool miles and redeem awards. An award ticket from the continental U.S. to Hawaii is a great value at 25,000 miles round-trip in economy.

Partner redemptions for first class awards are available for an undetermined amount of time. Korean Air partners with Alaska Airlines for good values on its long flights, including U.S. transcontinental routes like New York to Seattle. At just 80,000 miles round-trip from the U.S. to Europe in business, this is one of the cheapest mile prices anywhere to cross the Atlantic.

Korean Air serves 50 countries from its hub at Incheon International Airport (ICN) and its slogan, "excellence in flight," reflects its commitment to providing a high-quality travel experience. While Korean Air no longer allows award holds, they may offer a generous hold if you specifically mention waiting for points to transfer to SKYPASS.
