The Chinese Lantern Festival's annual appearance in Philadelphia signifies the arrival of summer within the urban landscape
The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is set to illuminate Franklin Square once again, running from now until August 31, 2025. This annual event, now in its eighth year, promises a mesmerizing display of over 1,100 handmade lanterns, cultural performances, food vendors, and interactive games, making it a family-friendly experience not to be missed.
The festival, organised by Amy Needle, president and CEO of Historic Philadelphia, takes place each evening starting at 6:00 p.m., with a fountain show before the lanterns come to life at sunset. The event is a celebration that draws crowds from diverse generations and cultures, as evidenced by the attendees like James Rohmann, who made a day trip to the city specifically for the festival, and Tamea Butler, a visitor from Nashville, Tennessee, who praised the festival's diverse crowd and beauty.
One of the festival's main attractions is the 200-foot-long dragon, which serves as the centrepiece. This majestic creature has become an iconic symbol of summer in the city, and some attendees, like Philadelphia resident Jamie Lenegan, embrace the event by dressing in traditional Chinese attire.
The festival was originally timed to coincide with the traditional Lantern Festival, which marks the end of the Lunar New Year period. However, to avoid unpredictable winter weather, it was moved to the summer season. Despite this change, the festival remains a seasonal tradition that continues to captivate visitors with its visual splendour, making it a must-see event in Philadelphia's summer calendar.
