Enriching the Story

Thailand's proposed IR projects are currently in the planning and bidding phase, with major casino operators worldwide vying for licenses. While the final locations are yet to be selected, pending government approval and operator partnerships, several locations have been proposed.

Bangkok

Two promising locations in Bangkok are the Nong Chok district near Suvarnabhumi Airport and the Bangkok Port/IMPACT Complex. The Nong Chok district is proposed for a mixed-use complex that will include casinos, hotels, and entertainment facilities. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Port and IMPACT exhibition center are under consideration, thanks to the support of the Transport Ministry.

Chiang Mai, Chonburi, and Phuket

In addition to Bangkok, these three locations are also proposed in a government plan for four casino resort locations.

Phang Nga Bay

Though not officially confirmed as an IR site, Phang Nga Bay, near Phuket, has potential due to its secluded luxurious resorts and stunning landscapes.

Tourism Prospects

All proposed locations boast unique tourism prospects. Bangkok, with its central infrastructure and connectivity, is a prime candidate for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) tourism. Phuket and Chonburi, on the other hand, are well-established beach tourism markets with existing luxury resorts. Finally, Chiang Mai offers a contrast to coastal destinations with its cultural and eco-tourism attractions.

Operator Interest

Six mammoth casino operators—including Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), Melco Resorts, and MGM Resorts—are actively bidding for these lucrative licenses. These operators seek to build not standalone casinos but rather large-scale entertainment complexes. Final sites may depend on the outcome of operator-Thai partner collaborations, as land availability and government priorities play a significant role.
