Student with overt tuberculosis still attended school in NKO region

In the small town of Novoishimskoe, a 6th-grade student at School No. 1 has fallen victim to a tuberculosis (TB) relapse, after previously recovering from the disease in 2022. This news, reported by Liter.kz, has put over a thousand students and school staff on high alert.

Last week, Arman Kushbasov, the head of the Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Control of North Kazakhstan region, confirmed the unfortunate development. The young child, who had battled TB in 2021 and had since completed his treatment and follow-up monitoring, is now undergoing treatment again at the regional phthisiopulmonology center.

Following a notification from the district hospital about the relapse, disinfection immediately took place at the child's home on May 12, with a full sanitization of the three-thousand-square-meter school being completed on May 13.

The list of individuals who have come into contact with the infected child has reached over a thousand, comprising students, teachers, and staff. All of them are currently under medical observation. The school itself houses 939 students, 112 teachers, and 25 technical staff.

The district hospital is currently conducting test screenings on the child’s classmates, with 17 having been examined so far. It's worth noting that Kazakhstan, like many nations, administers the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine to infants and children as a primary preventive measure against TB.

Despite the panic that might ensue, Kushbasov asserts that there is no basis for quarantine or switching to distance learning. "According to sanitary norms, TB is not among the diseases that require restrictive measures, including quarantine," Kushbasov emphasized, adding that he urges all residents, particularly children, to undergo a preventive examination.

It's crucial to remember that Kazakhstan, since 1998, has implemented the WHO-recommended DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course) strategy for TB control, ensuring supervised treatment and preventing relapse or drug resistance. In the wake of this case, health authorities are vigilant about drug resistance, a significant issue in Kazakhstan with around 34% of multidrug-resistant TB cases among new TB patients.

In light of this alarming yet manageable situation, it's heartening to know that the proper precautions, including prevention measures and monitoring, are in place. The combined efforts of health authorities and the educational system will hopefully put an end to this outbreak and ensure the well-being of the school community.
