Spain Sets New Summer Tourism Record - Spain Welcomes Record 66.8M Tourists in First Eight Months
Spain has welcomed a record-breaking number of tourists in the first eight months of this year. Nearly 66.8 million foreign visitors arrived, a 3.9% increase from the same period last year.
The surge in tourism follows a 1.6% increase in visitors in July and a 2.9% rise in August compared to the same months in 2021. This growth is significant, given that tourism is a major economic driver for Spain.
However, the increase in visitors has also sparked concerns about overtourism. Protests have been on the rise in popular destinations such as Barcelona, Málaga, and the Balearic and Canary Islands. Locals have expressed worries about the impact of mass tourism on their communities and environments.
Despite the protests, Spain continues to attract record numbers of tourists. With nearly 66.8 million visitors in the first eight months, the country is on track to exceed last year's totals. The tourism industry remains a crucial sector for Spain's economy.
