Southwest Brings Affordable Flights to Alaska in May 2026

Southwest Airlines is set to launch seasonal flights to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in May 2026, bringing more affordable and reliable connections to Alaskans and boosting tourism. The exact start date has not been revealed yet. This move will connect ANC to Denver and Las Vegas, with tickets going on sale in October 2025.

ANC will become Southwest's fifth new destination in 2025, expanding its network to 122 airports and making Alaska the forty-third state served. The addition of Southwest reflects the success of ANC's long-term strategies to expand service and support the state's economy. Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance anticipates a significant economic boost for the city and southcentral Alaska due to the new service.

Southwest operates only economy class seating and is known for its unique boarding policy, which is scheduled to end in January 2026. However, the airline announced in May 2025 that it would end its allowance for two free checked bags.

Southwest's entry into the Alaska market is expected to provide more options and competition, potentially driving down fares and improving reliability for Alaskans. The new routes to Denver and Las Vegas, along with the economic boost anticipated by Mayor LaFrance, highlight the potential benefits of this expansion.
