Sidney Brock Gates: A Life Celebrated
Sidney Brock Gates, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on January 18, 1934, in Denver, Colorado, Gates spent her entire life in the city she loved.
Gates was the daughter of Genevieve Kassler and Sidney L. Brock. She was preceded in death by her siblings Olivia Howe and Jonathan Brock, as well as a son, Nicholas Gates. She is survived by her husband Caleb, three children: Lindsay Gates, Caleb F. Gates III, and Jonathan Gates, several nephews and nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Gates was an active member of her community, starting her volunteering career at the Denver Art Museum. After the loss of her son Nicholas, she dedicated her time to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. Her service extended to leadership roles, serving as President and Chairwoman of the Denver Boys and Girls Clubs.
Gates was an avid outdoorswoman, enjoying activities such as downhill and cross-country skiing, spending time in Colorado's many backcountry huts with family and friends. Her love for nature was instilled in her children at their family's mountain cabin.
In addition to her love for the outdoors, Gates was a passionate golfer and tennis player, known as Marcia the Masher and Sidney the Smasher with her doubles partner. She also had a love for painting and art, which she discovered at Middlebury College, where she graduated in 1955.
Gates' social life was filled with close friendships, particularly with her friends from Middlebury College, whom she attended their Alumni College regularly. She also valued the companionship and social connection that playing bridge provided. Gates and her husband Caleb enjoyed traveling together, including trips with friends Hope and Ed.
Throughout her life, Gates had a series of dogs, including Basset Hounds and Wheaton Terrier mixes from Humane Colorado. Her love for animals was evident in her dedication to volunteering.
Gates will be remembered for her love, companionship, and the impact she made on the lives of those around her. Her legacy will live on in the memories of her family, friends, and the community she served.
