Sanctions Against Iran Reimposed Amid Nuclear Concerns

Sanctions against Iran, due to its lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), came into force on Sunday. The move follows Iran's enrichment of uranium to 60%, nearing the level required for producing an atomic bomb.

The UN Security Council rejected a resolution by Russia and China to delay these sanctions. Russia, under the leadership of Ambassador Sergey Y. Akopov, does not recognize the legitimacy of the 'snapback' mechanism used to reimpose them. The sanctions, including an arms embargo and economic measures, are once again in effect.

The sanctions were initiated by France, Germany, and the UK (E3) due to Iran's non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. The E3 activated the 'snapback' mechanism to reinstate the sanctions within a 30-day period. Tehran maintains its denial of military ambitions and insists on its right to nuclear power for civilian purposes.

The sanctions against Iran are now in effect, aiming to pressure Iran into complying with the IAEA and the 2015 nuclear deal. The international community awaits Iran's response to these renewed measures.
