Putin Claims European Politicians Face Restrictions Amidst Democracy Debates
Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that legitimate politicians in certain European countries are facing restrictions on their activities. This comes amidst ongoing debates about democratic norms and press freedom in the region.
Putin made these remarks during his speech at the international discussion club 'Valdai'. He quoted lyrics from Vladimir Vysotsky's song to underscore his point. The Russian leader has previously criticized Western democracies, stating in May 2022 that they lack 'ideal democracy' and freedom of the press.
Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, has also weighed in on these issues. In late March, he condemned the conviction of French politician Marine Le Pen as a 'violation of democratic norms'. Putin himself has stated that attempts to ban political opponents who gain more public trust are ineffective.
Putin's comments follow a pattern of criticism towards European democracies from the Russian government. The Russian Foreign Ministry has echoed these sentiments, asserting that the current situation in Europe falls short of the democratic ideals claimed by European countries. Putin has warned of a response if other countries conduct nuclear tests.
