Green Book Global and EatOkra Partner to Enhance Travel Experience for Black Travelers

Green Book Global, a travel review mobile app designed specifically for Black travelers, has partnered with EatOkra, an app that helps users discover Black-owned restaurants. This collaboration aims to create a network of trusted spaces for Black travelers, making it easier for them to travel and find safe Black spaces.

Lawrence Phillips, the founder of Green Book Global, developed a desire to create a travel review site after visiting over 30 countries across all seven continents. Prior to founding Green Book Global, Phillips worked at Accenture for eight years.

EatOkra was co-founded by Janique and Anthony Edwards. Anthony Edwards, a computer science graduate, used his skills to create the app. In 2024, CNBC reported that EatOkra had 20,000 monthly active users and generated approximately $700,000 in revenue.

The Driving While Black Road Trip Planner on Green Book Global does not currently include Black-owned restaurants from EatOkra. This partnership will change that, as over 2,500 Black-owned restaurants from EatOkra will be added to the planner.

The Driving While Black Road Trip Planner helps users avoid dangerous areas, find safe rest stops and cities rated by Black travelers, and book hotel stays, rental cars, and activities at their destination. Now, with the addition of EatOkra's extensive listing of highly-rated Black-owned eateries, travelers can easily browse and add these restaurants to their road trip routes across the United States, making it seamless to find and support Black-owned dining options while traveling.

This integration not only expands the discovery of Black-owned businesses on the road but also contributes to making road trips safer by providing trusted, community-vetted restaurant options along travelers’ routes. Thus, the partnership improves both the visibility of Black-owned restaurants and the travel experience for users seeking culturally affirming and supportive establishments.

The collaboration between Green Book Global and EatOkra is about culture, safety, and expanding the services available to Black travelers on Green Book Global. The two apps are working together to create a more inclusive and safe travel experience for Black travelers in the United States.
