North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is trialling a new role, criminal assistants, in four cities to ease the workload of detectives. The pilot project aims to free up police officers' time, allowing them to focus on investigative work.

The pilot project is underway in Essen, Bonn, Mettmann, and Hamm. It involves deploying 15 criminal assistants at each police headquarters. These assistants will handle administrative tasks such as searching databases, coordinating appointments, maintaining investigation files, and writing reports. This move aims to relieve criminal police officers from these duties, enabling them to concentrate on investigative activities.

The concept of criminal assistants is being tested in this pilot phase. After its completion, the project's success will be evaluated for potential expansion to other police headquarters in NRW.
