Junglia Okinawa: A Nature-Themed Amusement Park Revitalizing Northern Okinawa

Junglia Okinawa, a large-scale nature-themed amusement park, opened on July 25 in the northern Yanbaru region of Okinawa Prefecture, southernmost Japan. The park, designed by Katana Inc., a marketing company based in Osaka, aims to revitalize the local economy and tourism in the region.

Tsuyoshi Morioka, CEO of Katana Inc., leads the team behind Junglia Okinawa. The park showcases Yanbaru's natural environment, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience. The aim is to attract tourists to areas that have been traditionally less visited on the island, boosting tourism-related industries such as hotels, transportation, and local businesses.

According to estimates by Kansai University and professor emeritus Katsuhiro Miyamoto, Junglia could generate approximately ¥6.8 trillion (about $42 billion USD) in economic impact and create around 880,000 jobs over the next 15 years[1][2][4].

To mitigate traffic concerns, Junglia plans to operate free shuttle buses, while the Okinawa prefectural government will widen roads to enhance accessibility[2]. These measures aim to support sustained growth in tourism, helping to counteract leakage of tourism revenue away from local residents.

The opening of Junglia Okinawa has coincided with Okinawa's upgraded economic status to "recovering" by Japan's Finance Ministry, partly driven by increased domestic and international tourism linked to new attractions like Junglia. This has helped increase hotel occupancy rates and stimulate private consumption, contributing to Okinawa's overall economic resurgence[3].

Junglia Okinawa straddles the village of Nakijin and the city of Nago in Okinawa Prefecture. The park is expected to attract tourists to northern Okinawa, a region that has been skipped by tourists in the past. Local communities are hopeful that this influx of visitors will boost their economy and provide much-needed employment opportunities.

In summary, Junglia Okinawa stands as a major new driver of economic activity and employment in Okinawa Prefecture, with projected multi-trillion yen economic benefits and close to a million jobs created over 15 years through tourism-led growth and regional revitalization efforts[1][2][3][4].
