New Book 'Beyond the Welfare of the Child' Shines Light on 'Haasenburg' Homes' Past

A new book, 'Beyond the Welfare of the Child', is set to shine a light on the experiences of young people in the 'Haasenburg' homes in the 1960s and 1970s. The event, taking place on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 7:30 PM at Haus 73 in Hamburg, will feature readings from former residents and authors of the book. Admission is free, but a solidarity contribution is appreciated.

The book aims to serve as a reminder and a warning of the largest youth welfare scandal in the post-wall era. It features 14 young people's stories from their time in the 'Haasenburg' homes, where they experienced bullying practices that led to the homes' closure in 2013. However, this closure was later ruled unlawful in 2023, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the issues faced by the residents. The event will be moderated by Jan Kahlcke, the editor-in-chief of our website nord. Tickets must be booked in advance through the event's ticket portal.

The 'Haasenburg' homes' closure and the subsequent ruling have brought attention to the importance of considering the views of affected residents in such decisions. The book and the event aim to give a voice to these young people and ensure that their experiences are not forgotten. The event is a chance to learn about the past and reflect on the future of youth welfare.
