Kazakhstan Maritime Academy Cadets Gain Real-World Experience on Transatlantic Voyage

The Kazakhstan Maritime Academy has partnered with STC Group to provide second-year cadets with an immersive educational experience on the tall ship Eendracht. This transatlantic voyage, which began on Cape Verde Island off the west coast of Africa and ended on Curacao Island in the Caribbean Sea, covered approximately 5,910 kilometers.

The journey was a significant part of the educational process for the cadets, serving as an essential stage in their preparation for future maritime careers. This unique educational project offered hands-on experience in real-world ocean navigation, seamanship, teamwork, and maritime operations.

During the voyage, the cadets gained practical skills in traditional and modern navigation techniques, weather interpretation, ship handling, safety procedures, and life at sea. The experience allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world conditions, enhancing their ocean navigation skills.

The voyage also developed the cadets' seamanship and leadership abilities by participating in all aspects of daily ship operations, including watch-keeping, sail management, and emergency drills. This practical experience fostered international maritime culture and networking as the voyage often involved multinational crews and stops in various ports, broadening the cadets' cultural awareness and communication skills.

Living and working on a traditional sailing vessel like Eendracht built resilience and adaptability among the cadets, teaching them problem-solving and teamwork under challenging ocean environments. This immersive experience complements Kazakhstan Maritime Academy’s academic curriculum, better preparing cadets for careers in global shipping and ocean navigation, aligning with international maritime standards and practices.

The voyage was documented by the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education with a photograph, providing a visual record of this significant educational milestone. The journey was reported by the Ministry on Jan. 20, highlighting the importance of such experiences in the development of future maritime officers.

This partnership between Kazakhstan Maritime Academy and STC Group is a testament to the commitment to providing high-quality, practical education for its cadets, setting them up for success in their future maritime careers.

The transatlantic voyage offered the cadets an opportunity to augment their learning in education-and-self-development, particularly in areas related to travel and lifestyle, as they got a taste of life at sea.
