Navigated Rivian R1T Electric Vehicle Along Saline Valley Road, Death Valley's Least-Traveled Path, in Scorching 115-Degree Climate, Marking It as the First EV to Traverse This Route Independent of Assistance
In a daring demonstration of off-road prowess, automotive journalist Noah Washington from Atlanta, Georgia, successfully navigated the Rivian R1T unassisted over Saline Valley Road last weekend. This 93-mile journey through Death Valley's remote and rugged terrain was completed in scorching 115°F heat.
The Rivian R1T, a versatile electric vehicle, transformed into a transportation, base camp, and power station during the journey. Starting from Buttonwillow, the R1T charged at the Olancha RAN charger before embarking on Saline Valley Road with an 87% state of charge (SOC).
The first part of Saline Valley Road, known for its Joshua Tree forests, climbs to 6234 feet before descending. The road conditions after recent monsoon rains were challenging, with wash-outs and a driving pace similar to a walking pace in some places. Despite these difficulties, the Rivian R1T's unique Tank Turn capability and wading depth of 3+ feet with a sealed undercarriage allowed it to conquer the rough terrain.
The R1T's air suspension system, with an adjustable ride height from 8.1 to 14.9 inches, helped manage the varying elevations along the road. The peak elevation during the journey was 7538 feet on the return journey, which was the shorter and more well-maintained half of Saline Valley Road.
The Rivian R1T's Camp Mode was instrumental in the journey, providing up to 11kW of exportable power through its 120V and 240V outlets. This power was used to run an induction cooktop, keep coolers cold, and even absorb the failure of a heat-soaked auxiliary battery. The R1T's regeneration recovered roughly three-quarters of the climb on the way back down, making a significant difference in the journey.
The R1T's innovative Gear Tunnel storage, offering 11 cubic feet of secure lockable space, provided ample room for necessary equipment. The distinctive light bar design with customizable LED signatures ensured visibility during the night-time portions of the journey.
Upon reaching the camping spot at the upper warm springs, the R1T arrived with 70% left in the tank after 54 miles. The return journey saw the R1T airing its tires back up, clearing Saline Valley Road with 28% SOC, and arriving at the RAN charger in Bishop with 26.9% SOC.
The Rivian R1T's impressive energy and elevation management turned 'range anxiety' into a spreadsheet and a smile. The vehicle's ability to traverse such hostile geology, punishing sloppy planning, and complete the journey successfully makes it a formidable contender in the electric off-road vehicle market.
