Mourning the Life and Legacy of John Morgan (1973 - 2025), a Visionary Designer and Typographer in the Arts World
John Morgan, Renowned Graphic Designer, Passes Away at 52
John Morgan, a distinguished graphic designer known for his unique typographic sensibility and love for books, has sadly passed away at the age of 52.
Born on the 6th of January in 1973, Morgan's career spanned over two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the creative industries. His birth and death years bookend a life filled with remarkable achievements.
Morgan's work was diverse, ranging from designing David Chipperfield's monograph and art directing his work with Driade, to collaborating with renowned figures such as Edmund de Waal, art publishers Hamiltons, and Valentino. He also co-founded the digital foundry Abyme with Adrien Vasquez.
One of his most notable works was the book Usylessly, a deep dive into the aesthetics of the surviving copies of the first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses. This book will be re-published later this year by Ten Thousand Angels Press, followed by his final book, Baskerville's Teardrop Explodes: A Selection of Books as Muses.
Morgan's self-initiated projects, such as the series Klasse John Morgan related to his teachings at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, further showcased his talent and passion.
Morgan's last project was the creation of publishing imprint Ten Thousand Angels Press. He also worked on the redesign of the Common Worship Prayer Book, designed the signage, exhibition graphics, and monograph for David Chipperfield's directorship of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, and collaborated on the exhibition design for "The World of Charles and Ray Eames" at the Barbican.
Morgan studied under the late Ken Garland and taught on the MA Book Design course from 2007 to 2016 at the University of Reading. He also taught at Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art, and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, alongside his own agency, Morgan Studio, which he founded in 2000 and was based in the high-ceilinged clerks' offices above the Paddington station concourse.
John Morgan was not just a talented designer, but a humble, friendly, and endlessly inquisitive individual. He was deeply embedded in many facets of modern cultural life. Morgan is survived by his wife, Claire, and their three children.
MorganStudio.co.uk is the website for John Morgan's studio, a testament to his legacy and the impact he had on the graphic design industry. His work will continue to inspire future generations of designers.
