Plans for MV anthem abandoned - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Still Anthem-Less After 2017 Contest
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a state in northeast Germany, has no official anthem. While 'Where the Baltic waves creep onto the shore' is popular, efforts to adopt an official song since 1990 have been unsuccessful.
In 2017, a competition called 'So sounds MV' drew around 150 entries. Kally Darm's 'My Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania' won, earning him €20,000. The three finalists each received €1,000. However, the song faced accusations of plagiarism, though the complaint was later dropped. Darm transferred the usage rights to the MV homeland association, but it hasn't been performed.
Minister of Culture Bettina Martin (SPD) has stated that there are no further ambitions to pursue this topic. The state government has abandoned plans for a national anthem. Other songs, like 'The Song of the Pomeranians' from 1851, are still known and sung in the region.
Despite several initiatives since 1990, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remains without an official anthem. The winning song from the 'So sounds MV' competition, while popular, hasn't been adopted due to plagiarism allegations and lack of government pursuit.
