Man Sentenced for Deliberately Running Over Kangaroos

An Australian man, Leo Boland, has been sentenced after deliberately running over two kangaroos in a disturbing incident last July. Boland, from Sydney, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and lying to police charges. The incident occurred on a dirt road at Running Stream, about 200km northwest of Sydney. Boland, who had been drinking with friends, took his mother's Holden ute and deliberately swerved to hit the kangaroos, despite their attempts to escape. His passenger filmed the incident. Boland later lied to police about the event. He pleaded guilty to one charge of recklessly beating and injuring an animal, and another charge of providing false information. Manly Local Court magistrate Daniel Reiss rejected Boland's pleas for leniency, describing the case as 'disturbing'. Boland was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and must be of good behaviour for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a total fine of AU$1500 (NZ$1703). The court's decision sends a clear message about the seriousness of animal cruelty and the importance of responsible driving.
