Major Petroleum Spill in Yakutia After Tanker Collision

Emergency services are currently managing a substantial petroleum spill aftermath following a collision between a heavy-duty vehicle and a tanker truck in Lower Bestyakh, Yakutia. The incident occurred on February 13, 2024, and has resulted in a 100-meter-long spill on the roadway, approximately 120 meters away from the Lena River.

Inspectors from the Ministry of Ecology and state traffic police are on the scene, working diligently to contain and clean up the spill. The Ministry of Ecology is employing sorbent to absorb and remove petroleum products from the roadway. Despite the scale of the incident, on-site inspections have confirmed that no petroleum products have seeped into the soil, which is a significant relief.

The cleanup operation is ongoing, with petroleum products being pumped out from the spill site. The leaders responsible for the environmental inspection at the Yakutia environmental agency are involved in the fuel spill cleanup, although their names have not been publicly specified.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by the state traffic police. The environmental impact of the spill is being closely monitored, with the Ministry of Ecology and local environmental agencies working together to ensure the safety of the surrounding area and the Lena River.
