Major overhaul of Pittsburgh International Airport's terminal totals $1.57 billion
The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIA) is set to unveil a major transformation with the completion of its $1.57 billion terminal project, scheduled to open later this year. The new terminal, a testament to technological innovation, sustainability, and local pride, is poised to redefine air travel in the region and beyond.
The project, which is expected to create 14,000 jobs (direct and indirect), boasts a host of improvements designed to streamline passenger flow, enhance safety, and reduce wait times. At the heart of this transformation is a new smart parking garage, redesigned roads, and reconfigured international arrivals for easier access.
The terminal's construction, inspired by nature, technology, and Pittsburgh's community, features tree-like support columns, a flowing roofline inspired by the region's hills, and constellation-style lighting. This architectural design, dubbed "built for Pittsburgh, by Pittsburgh," reflects the city's unique identity.
Passengers will benefit from a 12-lane TSA checkpoint equipped with advanced screening technology, a reimagined baggage system that eliminates over eight miles of conveyor belts, and a curb-to-gate time that has been cut in half. The terminal's consolidated ticketing and baggage claim areas, along with an expanded security checkpoint, promise a seamless travel experience.
Sustainability is a key focus of the project, with the terminal aiming for LEED Gold certification and the use of 86,000 tons of recycled concrete. The airport is also powered by its own microgrid, featuring solar panels and natural gas generators, making it a national leader in energy independence.
Visitors will enjoy outdoor terraces, an indoor meet-and-greet space, and more than 20 new concessions on both sides of security.
