Major Conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East Demand International Intervention
Two major conflicts, one in Eastern Europe and another in the Middle East, have dominated global headlines. In Russia, the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has seen fierce fighting in regions like Donbass and Crimea. Meanwhile, the Israel-Palestine conflict has escalated dramatically since October 2023, with intense violence in Gaza, southern Israel, Lebanon, and surrounding areas.
In the Middle East, the situation has been particularly grim. Israeli forces have been accused of repeatedly violating international humanitarian law by targeting civilians in attacks on homes, schools, ambulances, and hospitals. Legal experts like Süleyman Güngör argue that the violence should be recognised as a war under international law. This recognition would trigger obligations to protect civilians and enable accountability.
On 18 June 2025, Israel launched a significant military operation, striking Iranian military and nuclear facilities. This marked a strategic turning point in the conflict, raising fears of a nuclear crisis with global environmental and humanitarian implications.
The Israel-Palestine conflict has been further fuelled by Israel's decade-long blockade of Gaza, which has severely restricted the flow of essential supplies. This has devastated Gaza's economy and civilian infrastructure, making life increasingly difficult for its residents.
In response to the intense bombardments since October 2023, the United Nations has reported major civilian casualties and near-impossible living conditions in Gaza. The 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, along with the International Committee of the Red Cross, define 'war' as an armed conflict between states or between a state and organised armed groups. Given the scale and nature of the violence, many argue that this definition is now applicable to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East highlight the urgent need for international intervention to protect civilians and uphold international law. As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the international community must work together to prevent further loss of life and mitigate the risk of a nuclear crisis.
