Loyalty Schemes and Direct Bookings: The Key to Big Savings for Frequent Travellers

Loyalty schemes offered by hotel chains can lead to significant savings and perks for frequent travellers. A recent study found that booking via these programmes was cheaper than major platforms like Booking.com and Hotels.com in nine out of ten cases.

One such programme is IHG's Diamond Elite status, which offers free breakfast, drinks, snacks, and early check-in after booking just 70 nights. Similarly, Hilton's Silver status, achieved after 10 nights, provides reduced room rates, late check-out, free bottled water, and spa discounts. These perks can lead to substantial savings, with the biggest found being £300 on a week's stay at a Dubai Hilton hotel booked via Hilton Honors.

Booking directly with hotels can also secure discounts, especially for independent hotels or smaller B&Bs. Additionally, third-party loyalty programmes like Booking.com's Genius and Hotels.com's OneKeyCash offer rewards such as 10% off standard rates and £2 to £10 per stay per night respectively. A room at Novotel London Waterloo was £41 cheaper when booked via Accor's loyalty programme compared to Hotels.com, demonstrating the potential savings.

Loyalty schemes and direct bookings can result in significant savings and added benefits for travellers. With careful planning and strategic use of these programmes, frequent travellers can enjoy substantial discounts and perks during their stays.
