Lea and Chris Make History on the Ohio River Way

Lea and Chris have made history by becoming the first paddlers to explore the Ohio River Way under its new National Water Trail designation. The couple spent nine days traversing 110 miles from Portsmouth to Cincinnati, Ohio, averaging about 12 miles a day. Their journey was marked by memorable connections with locals and a newfound appreciation for the accessible, working river.

The couple's trip was no easy feat, requiring an estimated 33,000 strokes each. Despite the physical exertion, they found the most memorable part of their journey to be the connections they made with people along the river. They encountered many kind locals who offered help, including a barista in Vanceburg, a man in Maysville, and Nikki Gerber in Brush Creek.

Lea and Chris were surprised by the accessible nature of the working, industrial river. They were used to wild and remote rivers, but they found the Ohio River Way to be just as engaging, with its own unique rhythm. The couple also took the opportunity to learn about the area's history, such as taking an Underground Railroad tour in New Richmond.

The Ohio River Way, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, aims to promote outdoor recreation, environmental stewardship, and economic development along the Ohio River. Lea and Chris hope that their experience will encourage more people to explore the Ohio River Way. Lea expressed that she will miss the river like a friend after her experience, highlighting the personal connection one can form with such a significant waterway.
