LDP to Elect New Leader Amidst Internal Divisions and Populism Rise

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is set to elect a new leader following Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's resignation after poor election results. The party, which has held power for roughly 64 of the past 70 years, now faces internal divisions over economic issues and the rise of populism.

The LDP's poor showing in the July upper house election has left it without a majority in either house of parliament. This has forced the party to seek cooperation deals with other parties to maintain power. The election of a new leader on October 3-4 will be crucial in rebuilding the party's image and securing its future.

The two front-runners for the leadership are Sanae Takaichi, a controversial figure with strong nationalist views and backing from party heavyweights, and Shinjiro Koizumi, a telegenic Agriculture Minister from a political dynasty. Takaichi's selection would make her Japan's first-ever woman prime minister, while Koizumi represents the 'new generation' of LDP lawmakers. The election is expected to be closely contested.

The rise of populism in Japan is evident with the increase in seats for the 'Japan first' party Sanseito, which now has 15 seats in the upper house. This shift in political landscape has put pressure on the LDP to address economic issues, particularly inflation and wage growth, which are the focus of the current infighting.

The LDP's leadership election on October 3-4 will determine the party's future and Japan's political direction. The new leader will face the challenge of rebuilding the party's image, addressing economic concerns, and countering the rise of populism.
