Latvian Cellist Plays Bach in Hot Air Balloon Over Masai Mara
Latvian cellist Margarita Balanas has performed in extraordinary settings, but her latest concert was truly unique. She played Bach's Cello Suite Prelude in a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara in Kenya, with cinematographers Kevin Kremer, Dean Seton, and Brugno Rapuzzi capturing the remarkable event.
Balanas, a regular soloist with prestigious orchestras like The Munich Philharmonic and Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, faced a new challenge in the unsteady environment of a hot air balloon. Despite her fear of heights, she felt a sense of calm and disbelief while performing on the edge of the basket.
The performance was part of a project involving Kevin Kremer, who was involved in the recording. Balanas found playing the cello in such conditions challenging due to the lack of support for the instrument and her legs. Yet, she managed to deliver a captivating performance, adding wildlife to her list of diverse audiences, which includes royals and dignitaries.
Balanas comes from a musical family, with violinist siblings Roberts and Kristine also performing internationally. Her talent has led to appointments such as assistant conductor of Paavo Järvi at the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich for the 2023-24 season, with an invitation to extend her position for the following season.
Balanas's unique performance in a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara showcases her versatility and courage as a musician. Despite the challenges, she delivered a memorable performance, further enriching her impressive musical journey.
