Largest Sand Island Globe-wide: K'Gari, Famously Known as Fraser Island
K'Gari, once known as Fraser Island, is a paradise waiting to be discovered. Named "Paradise" in the language of the Aborigines, this stunning island off the southeast coast of Queensland offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and wildlife.
The author and their family embarked on a two-day self-drive trip to K'Gari, packed with excitement and ready for an off-road adventure. The car was prepared, the off-road gear was readied, and the anticipation was high before the journey began.
Day 1: Exploring the East Coast
The plan was to drive as far north as possible on the first day and work their way south, stopping at various points. The adventure started with the famous 75 Mile Beach, the island’s drivable beach that also serves as a highway and occasional airstrip. Along this beach, the S.S. Maheno shipwreck, a rusting passenger ferry from the early 1900s, makes for a popular photo stop.
Indian Head, a premier lookout point on the eastern side, offers panoramic ocean views and excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. Unfortunately, access to Indian Head was closed during the author's visit, but it's a must-visit spot for turtle, dolphin, shark, and seasonal whale sightings from its 240-degree vantage point.
The Champagne Pools, located near Indian Head, are naturally formed rock pools where ocean water creates a bubbly, champagne-like effect. These pools are a safe swimming spot sheltered from strong currents and sharks.
Day 2: Inland Lakes and Beyond
Day 2 began with a refreshed group, ready to explore inland lakes on K'Gari. Lake McKenzie, a must-see, is known for its clear lake on a sand island, snow-white sand, deep blue water, and crowds. Lake Birrabeen, less crowded than Lake McKenzie, offers a peaceful and beautiful lake experience.
Lake Wabby, surrounded by gigantic sand dunes, is known for its deep green water and requires a bit of endurance to reach. During a previous visit, Lake Wabby was surrounded by sand dunes and offered a worthwhile view despite the effort required to reach it. However, the return journey from Lake Wabby was rushed due to the tide, highlighting the importance of checking tides before going to K'Gari.
The Pinnacles, a type of sand dune that have solidified over many years, provide a beautiful sight in various colours. Eli Creek, located further south on the 75 Mile Beach, has a beautiful short boardwalk leading into a tropical rainforest, with access to a crystal-clear stream.
The drive from Hook Point in the south to the Champagne Pools in the north was incredible, with many whales spotted and dingos on the beach. The journey concluded with a visit to Central Station, an area of dense rainforest with walking trails and picnic spots that provides insight into the island’s ecology and history.
The adventure on K'Gari came to an end, with the author recommending it for travel. K'Gari offers a balance of natural beauty, wildlife observation, history, and swimming spots, making for a comprehensive self-drive itinerary.
Getting to K'Gari
There are two ways to reach K'Gari: by ferry from Hervey Bay or from Inskip Point (Rainbow Beach). The ferry from Rainbow Beach costs $140 for 4 adults in a car (round trip) and takes 10 minutes.
The Pajero performed well during the off-road adventure on K'Gari. Remember to check tides before going to Lake Wabby and other inland lakes, and always drive safely on the island's sandy roads and beaches.
Whether you're a nature lover, a history buff, or an adrenaline junkie, K'Gari has something for everyone. So, pack your bags, buckle up, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure on Australia's Fraser Island.
