The eastern Mediterranean, where human history began, according to the 360 Degree History Research Association, is set to witness a unique event as the Hippoi, a reconstructed ancient vessel, prepares to set sail on Aug. 30, weather permitting.

Captained by Serim Paker, the Hippoi will eschew modern navigation methods in favour of ancient seafaring techniques. This symbolic journey aims to retrace the seafaring routes described in Homer's "Odyssey".

The Hippoi's crew, a group of highly committed individuals, are ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. The vessel, crafted without nails, using only wooden dowels and mortise-and-tenon joints, techniques dating back thousands of years, is a testament to the enduring maritime culture of the Aegean.

The project, titled "Journey to History in the Footsteps of Homer", was launched by the 360 Degree History Research Association, an organisation that has been working for 21 years to rebuild ancient vessels and sail their ancient routes. The association's leader, Mualla Erkurt, stated, "We are sea lovers."

The Hippoi's voyage pays tribute to both Homer, İzmir's legendary poet, and the region's rich maritime heritage. The association plans to establish a maritime center in Urla, near İzmir, and build new ships to explore new routes in the future.

Urla Deputy Mayor Dinçer Gözmen considers the Hippoi a cultural ambassador and a reconnection to the legends of the Aegean. The voyage aims to invite new generations to rediscover the sea through the lens of history.

The Hippoi's itinerary includes stops at Foça, Ayvalık, and Bozcaada before returning south. However, the exact routes and durations of the voyage are not shared, as it will be a different experience that adapts to sea and wind conditions.

The Hippoi's voyage, more demanding than previous ones due to its open deck, is expected to be a significant event in the region's cultural calendar. As the date of Aug. 30 approaches, anticipation grows for this unique voyage that promises to bring the past alive.
