Jeep Wagoneer S EV Tackles Long-Distance Road Trip with Success

Kat Stover, a new owner of a 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition, recently embarked on a 1,100-mile road trip from St. Louis, Missouri, to Madison, Wisconsin, and back over five days. The journey provided valuable insights into the real-world performance of the Jeep Wagoneer S EV in extended travel.

Real-World Range Experiences

The Jeep Wagoneer S EV has been reported to achieve a real-world range close to its EPA rating of around 294 miles. Some tests, such as a highway test by Car and Driver, indicated a range somewhat below this, at approximately 280 miles. Real-world driving conditions can affect this, with one test yielding about 3 miles per kWh, which is respectable for its size. This suggests that on long road trips, the Wagoneer S should be able to manage distances of around 300 miles on a full charge.

Charging Infrastructure Issues

  1. Charging Speed and Efficiency
  2. The Wagoneer S uses a 400-volt electric architecture and can charge from 20% to 80% in about 23 minutes using a high-power DC fast charger.
  3. Level 2 charging on a 240-volt circuit can take around seven hours to charge from 5% to 80%.
  4. Charging on a typical 110-volt household circuit is much slower, taking up to 53 hours for the same charge.
  5. Charging Infrastructure Availability
  6. The availability of high-speed charging infrastructure remains a challenge for long-distance EV travel. While DC fast chargers are becoming more common, their coverage can still be sparse in some areas.
  7. The inclusion of a 48-amp Level 2 home charger or equivalent public charging credits with each Wagoneer S can help mitigate some of these issues for frequent users.

The Road Trip Experience

Throughout the journey, the Wagoneer S EV performed well, driving smoothly and handling wonderfully with three adults and a preteen on board. Charging stops were strategically planned, with ChargePoint chargers providing a nearly effortless process, especially with the use of remaining Free2Move credits. However, a Rivian charger in Normal, Illinois, limited charging to $25 before cutting off, requiring one member of the party to restart the process.

The road trip demonstrated that the open road in an EV can be pleasant, especially with a full battery each day. Kat found a hotel in Madison that offered a free Level 2 charger in a covered garage, which was a logistical advantage for the EV road trip. The Wagoneer S EV charged each evening without issues and was ready for the next day's excursion.

Conclusion

The Jeep Wagoneer S EV is capable of handling long road trips with careful planning around charging stops, but it requires a strategic approach to maximize range and charging efficiency. The Wagoneer S EV, the first global BEV sold in the U.S. by Jeep, is built on the STLA Large platform with standard AWD and was initially built in Mexico (Toluca). It features 45 inches of total front display area across multiple screens. The Wagoneer S EV can tow up to ~3,400-3,500 lb, depending on configuration and source. Its 0-60 mph time is approximately 3.4 seconds (Launch Edition).
