What's Happening in Italy This May
Get ready for a busy month in Italy as we kick off the summer season with a bang! From Labour Day parties to new flight routes and major sporting events, there's something for everyone.
Labour Day
May 1st marks Italy's Labour Day, also known as Festa del Lavoro. Celebrate workers' rights and trade union achievements with parades, music, and festivals across the nation. Although a general strike may occur, museums and archaeological sites are expected to remain open.
Giro d'Italia
Cycling fans won't want to miss the 2025 Giro d'Italia, one of the world's most prestigious cycling competitions. The race begins on May 9th in Durrës, Albania, and finishes in Rome on June 1st, passing through cities, lakes, and mountain ranges all over Italy, as well as Slovenia and Vatican City.
Strikes
Italy's ever-present strikes are back this May, with two significant transportation strikes planned. The first one will affect trains on the evening of Monday, May 5th, and throughout the day on May 6th. A four-hour nationwide air transport strike on Friday, May 9th, is also expected to cause delays for travelers.
Venice Biennale and More
Cultural enthusiasts won't be disappointed either! From May 10th, the prestigious Venice Biennale showcases contemporary art in various forms, such as the International Architecture Exhibition. The World Press Photo Exhibition showcases the winning photos of the 68th competition at Palazzo Esposizioni in Rome.
