Influencer and aviator Ethan Guo discharged from an Antarctic air station following a two-month stint
Ethan Guo, a social media influencer from Tennessee, was released from a Chilean airbase in Antarctica on Saturday. Guo had been detained for two months after landing a plane in Chilean Antarctic territory without permission.
Guo's arrest was a result of him flying his Cessna 182Q beyond the authorized boundaries set by Chilean authorities. Initially, he was only allowed to fly over Punta Arenas in southern Chile. However, his plane kept going south and headed for Antarctica. Upon landing, he was arrested at the airbase.
Guo's lawyer, Jaime Barrientos, claims that Guo landed due to poor weather conditions and that he did receive authorization from Chilean authorities. Barrientos described the arrest as a 'total exaggeration'.
During his detention, Guo expressed gratitude towards the Chilean people for their hospitality and care. He stated that they had taught him Spanish and treated him like family. Guo also described his detention as a 'mundane' experience with 'limited freedoms'.
Upon his release, Guo wore a Chilean national soccer team jersey as a sign of respect and appreciation. However, he is banned from entering Chilean territory for three years.
Despite the circumstances, Guo appeared friendly with the press after his disembarkation. He reiterated his gratitude towards the Chilean people and expressed his intention to donate the tens of thousands of dollars raised during his fundraising mission for cancer research. As per the condition of his release, he is expected to donate the funds to a childhood cancer foundation within 30 days and leave the country as soon as possible.
However, as of now, there are no relevant search results providing information about whether Guo has fulfilled these conditions. Regardless, the release of Ethan Guo marks the end of a unique and controversial chapter in Antarctic history.
