IndiGo Airlines to Commence Flights from Adani's Debut Navi Mumbai Airport
IndiGo, the largest domestic airline in India by market share, has been chosen as the first carrier for commercial operations at the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The airport is developed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd and represents a significant stride in enhancing India's contribution to the global aviation sector.
Starting from the launch of NMIA, IndiGo will operate more than 18 daily flights, amounting to 36 air traffic movements, connecting to over 15 cities. IndiGo aims to significantly scale up these operations, reaching 79 daily flights by the beginning of November 2025, including 14 international services. This expansion, expected to continue until November 2026, will double the daily departure count to 140, with 30 international flights.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, stressed, "These new flights from the freshly inaugurated NMIA will elevate our passengers' travel experience while providing affordable, on-time, and hassle-free services across our extensive network."
The preliminary phase of Navi Mumbai International Airport will cater to 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo yearly, with the capacity projected to increase to 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes upon completion.
The new passenger terminal in Navi Mumbai is slated to open next month, aiming to decongest Mumbai's existing main hub, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). The launch of NMIA will establish a dual-airport system for the country's financial capital, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, stated, "Together, we are set to transform the travel experience for millions of passengers, offering them both convenience and enhanced travel options. Our collaboration will strengthen NMIA's role as an aviation gateway for the region and for travelers nationally and internationally."
With a fleet of over 400 aircraft, IndiGo operates close to 2,200 daily flights, linking 90 domestic and 40 international destinations. In the 2024-25 financial year, the airline inducted 58 aircraft and served over 118 million customers. IndiGo currently operates 280 weekly flights to five cities in the UAE from 20 Indian cities.
The airline, at the start of this year, embarked on a network expansion spree, announcing new services to Manchester and Amsterdam Schiphol, scheduled for July 2025. These routes are part of IndiGo's ambition to connect the Indian market with key European destinations, using Norse Atlantic Airways' aircraft as an interim solution before being replaced with IndiGo's Airbus A350-900 fleet.
