Celebrating the Legacy of Tumanbai Moldagaliyev, Kazakhstan's Beloved Poet

On March 20, Kazakhstan honors the 90th birth anniversary of Tumanbai Moldagaliyev, the celebrated poet whose love for nature and human emotions shines brilliantly in his works. Known for penning Kazakhstan's first national anthem, Moldagaliyev's verses continue to captivate hearts and evoke emotions.

Nurturing a Poet's SoulMoldagaliyev, born in the picturesque Zharsu village of the Almaty Region in 1935, was a humble man who discovered his poetic prowess in the mid-1950s while studying philology at Kazakh State University. His literary journey began with the publication of his debut poem, "To the Ukrainian Girl," in 1954, and continued unabated for decades, culminating in over 40 poetry collections.

Moldagaliyev's works extended beyond Kazakh borders, as he translated the poetry of Russian and Western literary greats, as well as neighboring countries, into the Kazakh language.

The Melody of His WordsIn addition to being an exceptional lyricist, Moldagaliyev was a gifted wordsmith whose work transcended literature and entered the realm of music. His collaborations with renowned composers such as Nurgisa Tlendiyev, Shamshi Kaldayakov, Aset Beyseuov, Gaziza Zhubanova, Esen Asenov, and Latif Khamidi produced timeless melodies that resonate with generations. Moldagaliyev's poems became the backbone of some of the most cherished songs in Kazakh music, enriching the nation's cultural heritage.

Some of his most popular works include "Birds' Song," "Birds Are Coming Back," "In the Arms of Happiness," and "Spring Calling." Moldagaliyev's wide-ranging portfolio is a testament to the enduring power of his words.

A National Anthem to His NameMoldagaliyev co-authored Kazakhstan's first national anthem, "Zharalgan Namystan Kaharman Halykpyz," which served as the official national song from 1992 until 2006. Alongside poets Kadyr Myrza-Ali, Zhadyra Daribaeva, and Muzafar Alimbayev, Moldagaliyev etched his name indelibly into Kazakh history.

Moldagaliyev left an indelible mark on Kazakh literature and music. His diverse body of work continues to inspire and captivate audiences, connecting people to the beauty of nature, the depth of human emotions, and the spirit of the Kazakh people. Though he passed away in 2011, his legacy thrives in the hearts and minds of those who love and cherish his poetry.
