Holiday travel chaos: Bavaria endures traffic congestion and passenger crowd records to initiate the season's festivities.
Hype City: Bavaria's Holiday Madness
Get ready, 'cause it's gonna be a zoo! With Whitsun holidays just around the corner, Bavaria is bracing itself for a chaos of epic proportions.
Word on the Street
Munich, the heart of Bavaria, is gearing up for a mad dash of vacationers. The roads are gonna be clogged, thanks to the warning issued by ADAC about the Free State seeing some serious gridlock. And it ain't just the roads – airports and trains are gonna be swarming too!
Airports Gone Wild
Munich Airport, Memmingen, and good ol' Nuremberg are ready for the traveling storm. Munich Airport expects about 17,000 flights during these holidays, a whopping 8% increase compared to 2024's Whitsun. That's 2.3 million passengers expected to pass through! Nuremberg isn't far behind, expecting a record-breaking 294,000 passengers – an almost 18% surge from 2024.
Destination, Destination 🎵
If you're thinking Mediterranean, you're on the right track! Destinations like Antalya, Mallorca, and various Greek islands are all the rage in Nuremberg and Munich. But Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey, and intercontinental destinations like the USA, Canada, Thailand, and Japan are also popular parties!
Navigating the Chaos
To avoid any delays at security, the airport operators suggest checking in your luggage at automated machines, and only bring the essentials in your carry-on. Road warriors, take heed: the A8 towards Salzburg, A9 towards Munich, the Inntal motorway, A95, and the Fernpass are predicted to be the worst-hit. Construction sites on the A3 near Passau and the A7 near Ulm, and speed limits of 120 km/h in some sections will further add to the headache.[1]
Austria's Brenner motorway A13 and the Lueg bridge are also known traffic jams hotspots. Make sure you get those vignettes in advance to save time at toll stations. The railway will also see more travelers, so expect delays on the route between Regensburg and Hof as well as in the Munich area, where work is underway on the main line.[2]
