Historic '1715 Treasure Fleet' Yields $1M in Coins

A team of salvors has unearthed a trove of coins from the fabled '1715 Treasure Fleet', adding to the ongoing recovery of this historic treasure. The latest find, valued at $1 million, consists of 1,051 silver reales and five gold escudos, all in remarkable condition.

The coins were discovered by Capt. Levin Shavers and the crew of the M/V Just Right off the coast of Florida. Each find helps piece together the human story of the '1715 fleet', which sank in 1715 with a total value of $400 million in gold, silver, and jewelry. This is not the first recovery from the wreckage; in 2018, a cannon was found, and in 2022, other artifacts were discovered.

The salvors, committed to preserving and studying the artifacts, extracted 1,051 silver reales and five gold escudos. Many of the coins still bear visible dates and mint marks, offering valuable insights into the fleet's history. The company holding the rights to salvage the '1715 Treasure Fleet' is 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels, LLC.

The recovery of these coins brings the total value of salvaged treasure from the '1715 Treasure Fleet' to over $500 million. Experts believe there's much more treasure yet to be found, keeping the story of this historic sinking alive for future generations.
