Bonsai wiring is an essential technique for shaping and sculpting your bonsai tree, and understanding the best practices can help ensure a healthy and aesthetically pleasing bonsai. Here's a guide to help you get started.
Choosing the Right Wire
Anodized aluminum wire and copper wire are the most common choices for bonsai wiring. Anodized aluminum wire is easier to handle, more flexible, and less likely to damage bark. It does not require annealing (heating) for flexibility. However, it has less holding power than copper wire at the same thickness, so a thicker gauge might be necessary to achieve desired shaping. It is reusable and cost-effective, making it good for beginners and deciduous species. On the other hand, copper wire offers stronger hold and is often preferred by advanced practitioners for its durability and grip, especially on harder or thicker branches.
Wrapping Technique
Wrap the wire at about a 45-degree angle to create a secure but gentle hold on branches and trunk. Begin wiring from the trunk or primary structure, then move to main and secondary branches, applying wire to one branch at a time to avoid wire crossing or damaging the tree structure. Secure the wire by wrapping the starting end tightly, possibly bending the wire tip into a small hook to improve grip and control during application. Keep wire spacing consistent and snug without cutting into the bark; this avoids wire scars and allows for natural growth.
Bending and Shaping
After wiring, carefully bend branches into desired shape without snapping, using gradual pressure. Monitor the tree regularly to remove or adjust wire before it starts to bite into the bark, preventing injury.
Additional Considerations
Prepare the tree beforehand by possibly thinning dense foliage if needed to allow wire access, but avoid excessive pruning that can weaken the tree. Use anodized aluminum wire for species sensitive to copper toxicity or when easy wire removal is preferred. Use copper wire for stronger shaping needs, particularly on conifers or hardwood species.
Caring For A Bonsai After Wiring
Depending on the species you've wired, the branches will take about 1 to 4 months to fully set into their new position. If you notice the wire cutting into the tree or causing damage, remove it immediately and rewire it if necessary.
