In the heart of Wuppertal, Germany, the Krummacherstraße cemetery has become a unique destination for visitors. The cemetery's chapel, part of the outdoor art gallery "Wuppertal dances," now boasts a captivating mural created by Chilean street artist Inti.

The mural, a vibrant spectacle of powerful tones of orange, purple, and pink, depicts two hands rising and embracing. It has become a focal point for passersby, who pause to admire the artwork while visiting graves. The press officer of the cemetery emphasises the importance of bringing life to the cemetery, seeing the mural as a means to create encounters, exchange, and new conversation topics, without compromising spaces for mourning.

The project "Wuppertal dances," initiated by Valentina Manojlov, is dedicated to the connection of dance, city, and art in public space. Each new work in the project brings together international street art and local cultural memory. Inti, whose art is globally recognised for symbolic wall paintings, has previously transformed one of Pina Bausch's works into a monumental wall painting in Cronenberg. This project features interpretations of works by the renowned choreographer, whose artistic legacy continues to resonate worldwide.

The chapel on Krummacherstraße was chosen as a place of connection, as it is a final resting place for one of Bausch's works. Stephanie Trapp from the Christian Cemetery Association believes Inti successfully bridges cultural gaps on the chapel in Varresbeck. The mural is intended to remind viewers that life and death are inseparably connected and to celebrate life.

Many visitors are coming specifically to the Krummacherstraße cemetery to view the mural. Inti's art often incorporates themes of life, death, and religion, with natural motifs and spiritual symbols. The artist's work is characterised by themes of sun, life, and spirituality.

"Wuppertal dances" has been transforming city spaces into a museum of dance since 2023. The mural on the chapel at Krummacherstraße Cemetery is another location transformed by the project, adding a touch of colour and creativity to the city's landscape. The finished mural on the chapel facade is creating a stir, encouraging reflection and conversation, and adding a unique element to the peaceful atmosphere of the cemetery.
