Job Tips: Sentences You Should Never Say to Your Colleagues - Germans Work Record 55 Billion Hours in 2023, Warns Expert of Harmful Behaviors
Germans logged a record-breaking 55 billion hours at work in 2023, according to a study by the IW labor market institute's Holger Schäfer. Despite a decrease in average weekly working hours, this figure hasn't been seen since 1993. Teresa Stockmeyer, managing director of Good Teamwork Rocks and a team development trainer, warns that such intense work environments can lead to harmful behaviors and attitudes.
Stockmeyer highlights several negative effects of excessive work hours. Comparisons with colleagues, generalizations, accusations, condescending remarks, and personal attacks can all damage self-esteem, trust, and relationships. 'Why can't you work like...?' or 'You always do this wrong' can demotivate and hinder productivity. Even more concerning, these behaviors are becoming more common as work hours increase.
She notes that more women are in the workforce, with women spending an average of 33 hours a week compared to men's 40 hours. However, the increase in work hours is not evenly distributed, with some employees feeling overburdened. Stockmeyer emphasizes the importance of open communication and understanding in the workplace to mitigate these issues.
With Germans working more than ever, it's crucial to address the negative impacts of excessive work hours. Stockmeyer's insights remind us that fostering a positive work environment, free from harmful behaviors, is essential for maintaining productivity and job satisfaction. As work hours continue to rise, so too must our efforts to support and respect our colleagues.
