Exhibition of "BAKERU" in Los Angeles Extended to October 20th Due to High Public Interest

Japan House Los Angeles, a two-floor space at Hollywood & Highland, is currently hosting the captivating exhibition, "BAKERU: Transforming Spirits". This innovative art event, conceived by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, offers a unique exploration into the spiritual transformation themes deeply rooted in Japanese folk traditions, particularly from Japan’s Tohoku region.

The BAKERU exhibition, created by WOW, a leading Japanese creative art and visual design studio with hubs in Tokyo, Sendai, London, and San Francisco, invites visitors to step into the supernatural world of Japanese folk traditions from the Tohoku region. Through motion capture technology, guests can become projected characters wearing special masks with sensor stickers, immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage and ritual practices from this historically significant area.

The significance of BAKERU lies in its focus on how spirits and spiritual transformation are expressed visually and culturally through Japanese traditions. The connection to the Tohoku region is crucial, as this area is renowned for its deep-rooted folk beliefs and festivals involving spirits and transformation. These traditions often involve masks, dances, and performances that symbolize transitions and spiritual presence.

Originally debuted on July 17, 2019, the BAKERU exhibition has been extended until October 20 due to its popularity. It serves both as a cultural preservation effort and a contemporary artistic exploration of Japanese folk spiritual identity in a diasporic context. The exhibition aims to enhance understanding of regional cultures, particularly those from Tohoku, which place strong emphasis on the transformative power of nature.

In addition to the main exhibition, Japan House Los Angeles offers a gastronomy event, the "Japanese Food Lab Presents Tohoku Izakaya Night", on October 6. For a fee of $65, guests can enjoy a taste of Tohoku cuisine at the Salon on Level 5.

Moreover, a mask-making workshop, the "BAKERU Mask Making Workshop", will be offered as part of the extended exhibition period. Consumers can also win a personal Bakeru mask by posting a museum selfie with the hashtags #JapanHouseLA and #BAKERU on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.

The BAKERU exhibition was conceived and created after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, with the aim of providing broader access to local culture. It is made possible in collaboration with ANA (All Nippon Airways), Panasonic, Gyouzanryu Maikawa Shishiodori, Tokyo Shishiodori, Oga City, Baba no Taue Odori Preservation Society, FabLab Sendai FLAT, Fukunaga Print Co., Ltd., cap LLC., Ito Yutaka, and Hollywood & Highland.

In a world where digital technology advances at a rapid pace, the BAKERU exhibition showcases the connection between long-lasting folk traditions and fast-advancing digital technology. It offers audiences in Los Angeles, a city with a vibrant Japanese-American community, insight into Japanese intangible cultural heritage, particularly how such ancient spiritual narratives remain relevant and influential today.

For those interested in attending the BAKERU Workshop, it will take place on Level 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the fee is $5. WOW's practice is based on a vision to bring positive change to society, and its original artwork and products have been exhibited both in Japan and internationally. The studio is passionate about exploring the tremendous possibilities of visual design; searching for solutions that are useful for society while revealing something true and profound.

Japan House Los Angeles offers a place of new discovery that transcends physical and conceptual boundaries, reflecting the best of Japan through its spaces and diverse programs. Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the transformative world of Japanese folk traditions at the BAKERU: Transforming Spirits exhibition.
