Évora Unveils Ambitious Smart City & PV Park Automation Projects
Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has embarked on an ambitious project to modernize its historic center while preserving its cultural heritage. The city has joined forces with seven other historical European cities in a smart cities and energy communities initiative. Meanwhile, a separate project aims to revolutionize the maintenance of photovoltaic parks through automation, using drones, sensors, and robots.
The Évora project, coordinated by EDP's Research and Development Center under the leadership of João Maciel, seeks to intervene in the city's architecture to integrate smart technologies. One of the key aspects is monetizing positive energy-related behaviors, such as the use of electric scooters. This innovative approach aims to incentivize sustainable practices while preserving Évora's historic charm.
In parallel, a groundbreaking project focuses on automating the cleaning and maintenance of photovoltaic parks. While no specific Portuguese companies were identified as leading this automation effort, Innovar Solar and COPA-DATA are known for their work in advanced photovoltaic technology and automation software solutions respectively. The automation project involves robots for vegetation cutting and panel cleaning, as well as drones for inspection. Pilot tests are currently underway in Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, demonstrating the project's international scope and potential.
Évora's commitment to smart city initiatives and automation in photovoltaic park maintenance showcases its dedication to preserving history while embracing innovation. The city's projects, led by EDP's R&D center, promise to enhance sustainability and energy efficiency, setting a precedent for other historical cities to follow.
