Enhanced overnight railway connection established between Marseille and Rome
Fancy a Riviera Ride?* Drop a line
Summer's almost here, and France's night trains are gearing up for an unforgettable journey. Get ready to embark on the Espresso Riviera, a new route from the dazzling southern city of Marseille all the way to the Italian capital, Rome.
Scoop
Here's a flavor of the adventure ahead—the Espresso Riviera service, launching on July 4th, makes a picturesque journey in just over 15 hours, every weekend until August 30th. Italian rail operator Trenitalia, now diving into the French market, brings this captivating overnight train to life.
The Espresso Riviera will depart Marseille in the afternoon, whisking you past the Côte d'Azur, and then cruising along the Ligurian Riviera as the evening settles in. It arrives in Genoa at 10.38pm, and the train will then carry on non-stop to Rome.
More than just a trip, this experience is designed to recreate the charm of the once-great international trains that are now but a memory, according to Luigi Cantamessa of Treni Turistici Italiani, the Trenitalia subsidiary responsible for this service.
On board, prepare to tantalize your taste buds with a dining car serving local delicacies, or settle into sleeping cars for one, two, or even four, complete with convertible daytime seats.
Deets
Tickets are now available for booking, with prices starting at €71 for the full journey. Tickets for Marseille to Genoa will set you back €54.90[1]. For those choosing the sleeping cars, expect to pay more. Compared to a Ryanair flight between Marseille and Rome, priced around €60, the Espresso Riviera offers a unique and scenic experience unlike any other—the track between Marseille and Nice hugs the Mediterranean coast, creating one of the world's most breathtaking train rides[2].
Bonus Tidbits
If you're up for more Mediterranean adventure, France also introduces a new Milan (Milano Centrale) to Nice (Nice-Ville) overnight service this summer. Running every Saturday and Sunday from August 4 to September 1, this route pauses at charming Italian coastal towns such as Pavia, Genoa, Varazze, Savona, Albenga, Alassio, Diano, Imperia, Sanremo, Bordighera, and Ventimiglia before making its way to France and stopping at Menton, Cannes, and ending in Nice[3]. This route promises a scenic journey through the Ligurian and French Rivieras, where comfort, culture, and breathtaking coastal vistas intertwine[4].
